Electromobility and Subsidies

Electromobility (Electrification) is a proposed method of vehicle promotion that began in the mid-19th century. Now, in the 21st century, with rapid technological advances in line with rising interest in renewable energy and the need to reduce pollution, electric propulsion is once again in the spotlight, as a more mature technology with many benefits. Today, moving with an electric scooter or electric motor is proven to be the most economical and environmentally friendly way to travel. It is worth noting that the increase in the number of electric motorbikes in their demand in the Greek market exceeds 40%.

Electrification is not something distant or a utopian dream. It is today's reality. Electricity is something we see having a dynamic in many markets, in many countries. Unfortunately, this is not the case in Greece yet, something that will soon change. In Greece, in essence, we would say that you are at a very low level of development. According to a report by the Reuters news agency, the percentage of electric cars in Greece is currently only 0.3%.

Less than 100 purely electric vehicles were sold in 2018-2019 out of a total of over 100,000 new vehicles entering the Greek market, so this alone shows that this is something that has not been developed at all. However, globally and in Europe, this is very different, already in 2018 more than 2,000,000 electric vehicles were sold worldwide and a little less than 500,000 in Europe. This is an exponential progress.

Electromobility will come. It is something that has been identified by the European Union, from the limits of the pollutants that have been put in and to be achieved it will not be possible without the assistance of electric propulsion. The Greek state has shown that in the case of electrification, as a country we want to be close to these developments through a plan, through a planning and not to come the developments violently and disorderly as is usually done in such cases.

Problems that have occurred so far have been the very significant cost of acquiring the vehicle and the autonomy. As far as the cost of construction is concerned, due to the cost of the battery, these vehicles exceeded the average price of the rest of the conventional vehicles, which is not the case today. In addition, the autonomy is at a much higher level and in 1 year from now there will be a new generation of electric vehicles that will have a range of up to 550 km at the cost of a conventional vehicle of the same efficiency. Also, the creation of charging stations throughout the country is under provision.

As announced by the Greek state, subsidies will soon be provided to boost electricity, for charging stations and for the purchase of electric bicycles, electric scooters, electric motorcycles and chargers. During the period 2020-2021, the amount of € 100 million will be allocated. Relevant financial packages will follow in the coming years. Electricity measures are part of a ten-year climate protection plan announced by the government. In addition to electric cars, electric motorcycles and electric bicycles must also be promoted. The Greek state has already signed two agreement memoranda, which are expected to be announced soon. It has become clear that this is not an "alternative proposal for withdrawal" but a long-term holistic plan with a budget under the supervision of the European Union.

It should be noted that the benefit for the purchase of an electric scooter is even greater as it was set at 20% of the nominal value with a limit of € 800 in the form of a subsidy, while for the purchase of an electric bicycle the subsidy reaches 40% of the value with a limit of € 800. If we take into account that the average cost of buying an electric bicycle ranges from € 1,600 to € 1,750, one realizes that this is a significant financial support. For the electric motorcycle, a further subsidy of € 400 is provided if the buyer proceeds to replace the old one in the form of withdrawal. Electric bikes are exempt from this subsidy. In addition, the purchase of a home charger is subsidized with the amount of € 500.
